Patina Miller to Star in Broadway's Sister Act The Musical

By Adam Hetrick

Patina Miller, who earned an Olivier Award nomination for originating the role of Deloris Van Cartier in the London stage musical Sister Act, will reprise her performance in the disco musical on Broadway this spring.

Miller, last seen as Dionne in the Public Theater's staging of Hair in Central Park, will again star as the nun on the run in the Broadway production of Sister Act The Musical, which will be directed by Tony Award-winning director Jerry Zaks.

Whoopi Goldberg, who also serves as a producer of the stage musical, created the role in the film. She produces Sister Act along with Stage Entertainment. The production concluded its London run Oct. 30 at the Palladium Theatre.

Based on the 1992 film of the same title, Sister Act The Musical will begin previews March 24, 2011, at the Broadway Theatre and will officially open April 20.

Sister Act has a score by Academy Award winner Menken and Glenn Slater. Tony Award-nominated playwright Douglas Carter Beane (Xanadu, The Little Dog Laughed) previously told Playbill.com that he is in negotiations to pen a new book to the musical for Broadway. The London production featured a book by Emmy Award-winning writers Cheri and Bill Steinkellner. The duo are still billed as authors of the book for the Broadway production.
The Broadway production will reunite the original London creative team, including choreographer Anthony Van Laast, scenic designer Klara Zieglerova, costume designer Lez Brotherston, lighting designer Natasha Katz and sound designer Mick Potter.

Michael Kosarin will serve as musical supervisor, with dance music arrangements by Mark Hummel, orchestrations by Doug Besterman and electronic music by Andy Barrett.

In addition to the Broadway run, a German production of Sister Act will bow in December, with productions also planned in Australia, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Italy, France and Spain in the coming months.

According to producers, "When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place cops are sure she won't be found - a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon the gang are giving chase, only to find themselves up against Deloris and the power of her new found Sister Hood."

Pasadena Playhouse - 2006

Directed by Peter Schneider and choreographed by Marguerite Derricks, the musical premiered at the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California on October 24, 2006 and closed on December 23, 2006. It broke records, grossing $1,085,929 to become the highest grossing show ever at the venue. Patina Miller, who would later go on to play the role of Deloris when the show opened in London, was in the ensemble and understudied Deloris.

Charles McNulty of the Los Angeles Times stated it has "Broadway blockbuster written all over it," and Laurence Vittes described it as "hugely entertaining... likely to become a classic" in The Hollywood Reporter. Jonas Schwartz (Theatremania.com) was less enthusiastic, saying it "suffers from a bit of an identity crisis. When focused within the confines of the church and the convent, the show is heavenly, singing loudly and confidently. However, the scenes that take place in the outside world are painted with unnecessarily broad and occasionally offensive strokes. Moreover, Dawnn Lewis lacks punch in the lead role of Deloris Van Cartier... [she] is too whiny to fully command the stage."

Alliance Theatre 2007

The production then moved to the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, where it ran from January 17 to February 25, 2007. The cast included Dawnn Lewis as Deloris, Elizabeth Ward Land as the Mother Superior, and Harrison White as Curtis.

Curt Holman, writing for the Atlanta-based website CreativeLoafing.com, described it as "a whiplash-inducing experience of genuinely clever and exuberant flourishes alternating with cringe-inducing embarrassments.... The weakest parts of Sister Act tend to be the most faithful moments to the film, which makes you wonder what Menken, Slater and the production's delightful design team could have done with original material."

West End - 2009

Sister Act opened in the West End at the London Palladium on June 2, 2009, following previews from May 7. The production was directed by Peter Schneider and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast, with set design by Klara Zieglerova, costume design by Lez Brotherston and lighting design by Natasha Katz.

Following a year-long search, 24-year-old actress Patina Miller was cast as Deloris, alongside Sheila Hancock as the Mother Superior, Ian Lavender as Monsignor Howard, Chris Jarman as Shank, Ako Mitchell as Eddie, Katie Rowley Jones as Sister Mary Robert, Claire Greenway as Sister Mary Patrick and Julia Sutton as Sister Mary Lazerus.

It was announced on April 29, 2010 that Pop Star, Simon Webbe, would join the cast as Curtis Shank on May 31, 2010 and that the production will close on January 1, 2011. It was then announced the show would close on October 30, 2010 to make way for Andrew Lloyd Webber's revival of The Wizard of Oz. Chris Jarman took a planned break from the show in May during which time Webbe played the role of Shank, and Sheila Hancock left in July due to other contractual commitments. All cast members except for Simon Webbe played their parts until the closing of the show.

Whoopi Goldberg joined the cast as the Mother Superior for a limited engagement that was suppose to last from August 10 - 31, 2010, but she left the cast on August 27 due to her mother suffering a stroke. Goldberg was then succeeded by Sally Dexter. However, Goldberg returned to the cast for five performances: one on October 22, 2010 and two shows each October 23 and 25.

The show closed as announced on 30 October 2010.

Hamburg - 2010

The German adaption of the show will open at the Operettenhaus in Hamburg on December 2, 2010.

The role of Deloris Van Cartier will be performed by Zodwa Selele. Daniela Ziegler will play the role of "Mother Superior", Tetje Mierendorf the role of "Bones." The roles of "Sister Mary Robert" will be Jana Stelley & "Sister Mary Patrick" will be playing by Tineke Ogink.

Broadway - 2011

A new Broadway adaption of the show will open at the Broadway Theatre on April 20, 2011, with previews beginning March 24, 2011. Jerry Zaks will serve as director for the Broadway production. Patina Miller, who originated the role of Deloris in the West End, will reprise the role on Broadway. Miller will also be making her Broadway debut in this production.

Vienna - 2011

The United Stages Vienna announced that the show will open at the Etablissement Ronacher in Vienna in September 2011.

Future Productions

According to Producer Whoopi Goldberg, plans are underway to relocate Sister Act to a more permanent London Theatre. She also added that a UK Tour will kick off in Autumn 2011. There also plans for several other major international productions including Utrecht (Holland).
